Seniors, we have worked and sweated for 13 years to reach this moment: our college application season! Thinking about this time in our lives might feel overwhelming, scary, or at times suffocating, but don’t worry. Today, we’ll talk about tips and tricks for navigating this season. If you’re not a senior yet, take notes so you’re ready when your time comes.
- Getting Started
If you are unsure where to begin, don’t panic! Our school’s College Counselor, Dr. Keller is here to help guide us through this process. “The Common App is a great place to start,” says Dr. Keller. The Common App is an online platform where students can submit applications to multiple colleges and universities. There, you will answer questions, explore schools, and follow step-by-step instructions of what to do next for your applications. Check whether you need recommendation letters, as many Florida public institutions do not require them. If they are needed, ask a teacher with whom you have built a strong relationship and actually know how you work and behave. If you’re not a senior yet, start building these bonds now.
- Building a College Prep Zone
When making a list of colleges, be realistic, but don’t underestimate yourself. Colleges don’t only look at SAT or ACT scores; they consider every part of your academic life. GPA, grades and test scores are all combined so admissions can get to know a little about you. If your score is below a school’s expectation, still apply. SAT scores and others are only a section of the bigger picture. Colleges want reasons to accept you, not deny you. Be aware of deadlines; there may be time to retake tests before your applications are due. Dr. Keller emphasizes that SAT prep is essential. If you’re unsure where to start, Khan Academy is a free, excellent resource. “Give yourself 20 minutes every day to study —you’ll be surprised at how much progress you’ll make,” Dr. Keller advises. Focus on areas with the greatest potential for improvement. While you should continue studying your weaker hand, spend extra time on the subject you’re stronger in to try to boost your overall score. This strategy maximizes results while improving your weaker areas. Helping you raise your scores.
- Writing Your College Essay
Start by reading the Common App prompt and brainstorming on paper what resonates with you personally. Write authentically, don’t try to write what the admission officers want to hear. Authenticity makes your essay personal and meaningful. Show who you are and how you will contribute to their college community.
- Scholarships
Scholarships are a two-way street: opportunities exist, but you need to put in the effort to earn them. Bright Futures is a great option if you plan to stay in Florida, Local scholarships, such as The Eda and Cliff Viner and George Snow, are also worth applying for. Don’t overlook opportunities. Dr. Keller has a Google Classroom with multiple scholarship websites and guides for this season. Contact him if you would like to join it.
- When Accepted
After your acceptances, stay committed and finish your senior year strong. Colleges can remove offers if your grades drop if your conduct is not honorable. Avoid “Senioritis” and keep your transcript strong. Check your email regularly, as colleges often communicate the next steps there. And finally, celebrate your hard earned success! Take time to enjoy the moment you’ve worked so hard to achieve.
- General Tips for Success
During this time, do not procrastinate. Start early so you can put your best work forward. Last minute applications lower quality, this is a reflection of you, so give yourself enough time to introduce yourself. If you haven’t started yet, start now! The process isn’t difficult, but it requires a lot of work. Know your deadlines for applications and scholarships, they also are your guide for this season. Lastly, do not be afraid to contact Dr.Keller. This is a judgment free zone as we are all learning together. He will guide you through the process, so don’t hesitate to reach out and ask questions.
