A great coach not only makes the team thrive but shows the players what challenges they can overcome. Coach Quan started playing volleyball in his senior year of high school. His first volleyball coach showed Quan a new perspective in the game of volleyball. Not only did his first coach helped him find his passion and love for volleyball but also showed Quan that volleyball isn’t just about winning but the discipline, determination, and the positive mentality that players carry with them on and off the court.

This is Quan’s second year of coaching the girls varsity volleyball team at West Boca Raton High School. Coach Quan defines success as he sees the progress and improvement at every game. The varsity team is giving, as he says, “110% on the court at every tournament.” At the varsity level it is less about the skill development, but more about the focusing on techniques and implementing them to the game strategies by performing certain drills that focus on that specific skill like serving, passing, and teamwork. He ensures that players frequently practice because repetition is important to him. Players get the feedback from their coaches- they evaluate and analyze their own mistakes and they learn to give themselves feedback. Quan wants his players to learn analytical skills, not just for volleyball but for their future.
In the varsity girls volleyball team Coach Quan tries to build culture among the girls by making them feel as if they are part of a family and pushing each other, individually and as a team. He values a positive attitude because seeing athletes encouraging and supportive of each other is what makes a good team. Coach Quan’s motto, “competitive yet collective” means playing volleyball and showing how valuable teammates support for each other as they share the same goal.
Coaching isn’t about leading players to success, but showing them what they can handle. Since Quan’s presence the volleyball program has become stronger, for example by creating the new freshman team that provides an opportunity for more players to play volleyball competitively. His wish is to be impactful to athletes and set them up for success in the future. We want to appreciate Coach Quan hard work and his time to sit down with us and share his devotion, dedication, and affection for volleyball.
