September is the month that marks Suicide Prevention Awareness Month, a time dedicated to recognizing the importance of mental health. At West Boca, we aimed to come together to remind students that help is available on and off campus. Last week, from September 8 through 12, we held multiple events to spread the word about Suicide Prevention Awareness Month.
- Monday 9/8: A morning announcement was made about news regarding Suicide Prevention Awareness Month
- Tuesday 9/9: Students were able to participate in making mini coping skills boxes during lunch
- Wednesday 9/10: Students and staff showed support through dressing in purple and/or teal
- Thursday 9/11: Students were handed worksheets during 1st period about how to reach out for help
- Friday 9/12: Students were given post-it notes to jot down positive affirmations
This month, we should all strive to not just spread awareness on the importance of suicide prevention, but we should always work towards creating a safe environment. Through participating in these activities at West Boca, students were able to learn more about the importance of mental health and what we can all do to cope with it.
Help is always available for everyone, and we all deserve to feel safe and heard. If you or someone you know is struggling, don’t hesitate to reach out to a trusted adult such as parents/guardians and counselors. If you hear anyone that you know showing signs of struggling with mental health, please speak up about it and make an important impact. Help can also be found through calling/texting the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline at the number 988.
