As our school has grown more sports-focused over the years, more and more colleges and universities have shown an interest in our student-athletes. Many schools, like the University of Miami have given out offers to our amazing West Boca athletes to pursue their dreams in sports. The process is very lengthy and well-organized, so each student ends up where they are supposed to be.
In short, the process starts freshman year, researching what division you would like to end up in and gathering data from measurements (ex, 40 yards rushing). In your sophomore year, focus on building your athletic resume and creating a well-edited video showcasing the amazing highlights of your career. During junior year, focusing on calling and sending letters to these top schools will get your name out and hopefully give you the chance to be recognized. By junior/ early senior year, you should receive all the colleges that are interested in you and what type of scholarship they are awarding. One of our graduating seniors Madison Luft had a few words on how this process works, “It started with a follow on Twitter! I had looked at many colleges, not knowing which one I wanted. I had a school reach out to me and ask if I wanted to go on a visit. When I stepped foot on campus I knew it was home. The process usually takes a while unless you had colleges prior looking at you.” With this being said, it is never too early to master your craft for your dream!
During the whole process, it could be confusing to determine what these colleges are looking for. Depending on the division and establishment, each college will have its own way of recruiting. The main way they find the students is by looking at their athletic ability and what they can bring to the school. As far as academics go, this is a vital piece of information that will encourage colleges to choose their future students. Having a strong character or personality will also help these universities make their choice.
Overall, this process can be very stressful and time-consuming. The outcome for many students, especially here, has shown great success.
