From September 15th to October 15th, the United States comes together to recognize the impact of Hispanic culture by celebrating National Hispanic Heritage Month! The reason why Hispanic Heritage Month starts on the 15th is because it also marks the Independence for Latin American Countries such as Costa Rica, Guatemala, Nicaragua, El Salvador, and Honduras. This month, we recognize that the cultures coming from the various Spanish-speaking countries have made impacts through many stories, artworks, music, and cuisine.
It is a month where we can further enhance our self expression through our backgrounds, while also recognizing others who come from different backgrounds as well. Although we honor and celebrate the many contributions of Hispanic and Latino communities in this country, we should all strive to recognize their impacts year-round.
Beyond cultural influence, Hispanic and Latino communities have made strong impacts towards the U.S. economy as well. According to UCLA, Latinos are responsible for 30.6% of the GDP growth in this country.
As a Colombian, I hold strong pride towards my background and the communities relating to it. My background not only connects me to others, but it helps me to further appreciate how we play a part towards shaping this country. By celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month, we can all work together to continue to understand those in hispanic communities and the impact of them.
