Choose Something You Love

Julia Palhares, Reporter

“Choose something you love,” they said. “You have to make money,” they said. However, high school seniors know that both sentences are utopia, especially together. Choosing a college major involves MAJOR financial planning, considering your aptitude, the ideal school, and even your post-graduate salary.

As a member of the senior class of 2023, I understand what my peers are going through, making pros and cons lists of every college they can name, spending sleepless nights sitting in front of gigantic “SAT Prep”  books in order to get the best score possible, and maybe even messing up the books with tears shed.

Whether you’ve had your mind set on a career since kindergarten days or have applied to college already, picking what you want to major in, and your profession for the rest of your life is a MAJOR decision to make as a 17-year-old. However, there is no need to panic, there are a few websites that offer free quizzes and tests to get you started.

My 3 favorites are:

  1. SCOIR (https://app.scoir.com/student/discover) – Featured in SIS, SCOIR offers an aptitude test that allows you to see what career paths are a good fit for you. It tests your math, logical reasoning, and group management skills.
  2. 123 Career Test (https://www.123test.com/career-test/ ) – This quiz tests your personality and how it would fit into different careers.
  3. . Princeton Review Quiz (https://www.princetonreview.com/quiz/career-quiz) – Similar to the 123 Test, the Princeton Review Quiz questions what you would rather do: work inside or outside? In a group or by yourself?

. High Schoolers, please take a breath; although it seems like this decision will define your future, you can always change your major during your college years. Your success depends on you and you only, on your hard work and dedication, regardless of what you choose to pursue in college.
