The 2026 winter olympics were historic for the United States, which had the USA win 12 Olympic golds. This beat the old record for the states during the winter olympics of 10 golds, which took place in the 2002 winter olympics. The only country with more golds was Norway, who absolutely dominated the ski-related events, which allowed them to bring home 18 medals, setting a new record for the winter olympics.
Team USA finished with 33 total medals, consisting of 12 golds, 12 silver, and 9 bronze medals. This put them in second place, just trailing Norway’s 41 medals. This is the 3rd most successful winter olympics for the states, only falling behind the 2002 and 2010 Olympics for total medal count. This was also the biggest olympic team that the states have ever had, with 232 athletes representing our country. The biggest event won for the states was the men’s ice hockey, where Jack Hughes scored in overtime to beat Canada, and it took place exactly 46 years after the original “Miracle on Ice.” This historical significance makes it the story of this year’s Olympics. The other important events that were won was figure skating team event, womens singles figure skating, womens slalom alpine skiing, womens downhill alpine skiing, mens 500m and 1000m speed skating, mixed aerials freestyle skiing, mens halfpipe freestyle skiing, womens moguls freestyle skiing, women’s monobob, and women’s ice hockey, which was also won in overtime against Canada.
Speed skater Mia Manganello made history by becoming the first American to medal in the mass start event, earning bronze. Laila Edwards became the first African American woman to score a goal for team USA in the Olympics this year. Chloe Kim became one of 5 snowboarders in the olympics to medal when attempting to get a three peat, and unfortunately she only won silver. The states medaled in 11 different sports and was one of 2 countries to compete in every sport. This year will be remembered as one of the best performances from team USA in the winter olympics, and we will continue to raise the standards for American athletes on this stage.
