After the long wait, the Super Bowl finally came along and millions of people were looking forward to seeing Bad Bunny’s halftime performance! Considering that he is still in the middle of his tour for his album DeBÍ TiRAR MáS FOToS and attended the Grammys last week, Bad Bunny has had plenty of things on his plate. Due to the message that he has spread in relation to being a symbol of hope for immigrants and the Latino community, plenty of pressure and attention were being put on Bad Bunny as people were curious to see what he would do on the “world’s biggest stage.”
Since the moment that Benito started with his hit song Tití Me Preguntó, people could feel the immense energy that was coming from the stadium by just looking at their TV’s at home. Throughout the performance, Bad Bunny would often make references to Hispanic (specifically Puerto Rican) culture through the pavas (straw hats), sugar cane fields, coco frio and piraguas carts, and much more. Considering the political environment of the country, Bad Bunny made sure to make his message clear about unity and how “the only thing stronger than hate is love.” Through the use of various flags of countries/lands within the Americas and vocally listing off all of their names, Benito wanted to state how “together we are America,” which was also written on the football he held and spiked.
With various songs such as NUEVAYoL, EeO, MONACO, and El Apagón, Bad Bunny created an electric energy that didn’t need to be understood through the language. It was extremely clear that the stadium was lit up since the start of this performance. Fans were extremely pleased to catch a few of their favorite celebrities such as Karol G, Cardi B, Rauw Alejandro, and even Pedro Pascal! Not to mention, audiences were shocked to see surprise guest performances of a salsa-rendition of Die from a Smile with Lady Gaga and LO QUE LE PASÓ A HAWAii with Ricky Martin.
Various key moments and cut scenes were mentioned to enhance the meaning and purpose of the halftime performance, including the part when Benito passed his Grammy award to a little boy to symbolize a younger version of himself. Also, the wedding that was seen in the middle of the performance was real and included to highlight the message of celebrating community and love. Originally, the couple had reached out to Bad Bunny to come to their wedding, but they ended up being invited to have it held at the Super Bowl, creating an unforgettable experience for the newlyweds!
This Super Bowl halftime show will be one that will be talked about for many years to come, and will be remembered for the music and unity that Bad Bunny brought to the stage!
