Mental Health Month

Mental+Health+Month

Jordan Smith, Staff Writer

The topic of mental health has been heavily stigmatized among society for decades after we decided to acknowledge it existed. Recently, there has been a surge of people from all walks of life working to destigmatize it, and organizations dedicated to teaching the general public on mental health. On February 4th, for about fifty minutes, classes will dedicate that time to go over a series of topics centered around mental health. These discussions will be every Wednesday and Thursday, for the next few weeks, ending on Thursday, February 27, 2020.

According to the Teacher Quick Guide, sent to all the teachers, stated the goals are as following:

  1. Recognizing signs and symptoms of mental health disorders and reducing stigma
  2. Prevention of mental health disorders and mental health awareness/assistance
  3. Awareness of local community resources and the process for accessing treatment
  4. Strategies to develop healthy coping techniques
  5. Strategies to support a peer, friend, or family member with a mental health disorder
  6. Prevention of suicide
  7. Substance abuse protection
  8. Child trafficking and Substance Abuse Prevention
