West Boca’s Hillary Hernandez wins Scholastic’s Gold Key Award!

Dylan Gaynor, Reporter

West Boca High’s very own Hillary Hernandez is a finalist for the Scholastic Art Gold Key Award! This competition, which is a highly prestigious award within the artistic community, consists of individual submissions from all over Palm Beach County. Here is what Hillary had to say about the competition:

“My art teacher, Mr. Bruckner told me about it and I decided to turn it in to get some exposure for my art work. I decided to post one that I was very proud of but then I saw that I had to pay, so I left it there until I got the money. I didn’t know it was a whole competition. I thought they would just post my art on the website and that’s it.”

She went on to say about her character Luci:

“It was hard to get a pose that suited her, until I found this orchestra conductor called Tomomi Nishimoto who had the same energy as my character. She was the main inspiration for the pose, and after getting all of my references, I got my iPad and started sketching. This is a very important part because it will determine the composition of the piece. For the background, I drew some characters from the story looking at Luci, and blurred them out so they don’t take the attention from the focal point but you can still see them.”

Here is Hillary’s art piece, depicting her character Luci!
