Get Ready to Vote!

Turning 18 not only makes you an adult but it also enables you to vote! Here’s how you can prepare to vote! The first step is to register. You can easily register online, but be sure to meet the deadline. In Florida, you must register 29 days before Election Day.

Before voting it is important to take the time to educate yourself on who and what you are exactly voting on. Follow and keep up with reputable news sources to learn more. Be sure to get to know the candidates before casting your vote. Explore their views on issues and look back at their past records/experiences. It is extremely important to learn about the person before giving them your vote.

Remember that your vote matters! Voting is not only a fundamental way to express your voice in society, but it’s also your civic duty. By casting a vote, you have a direct impact on the policies and laws that govern our society. Elected officials that you choose will make the decisions that affect every aspect in our life including education, healthcare, the economy, and social issues.

Make sure you are familiar with your voting rights. Understand the rules regarding your voter identification, polling locations, and absentee voting in Florida. Being informed of these rules before you vote will help to ensure a smooth and efficient experience.

For first time voters, you may want to look into options for voting early or getting an absentee ballot if you’re not able to vote in person on Election Day.

Another option when voting is to participate in primaries. Primaries are important in selecting candidates for the general election. Research these primary elections and participate in them to have a say in who will represent your preferred party.

As election day approaches be sure to stay informed about polling locations, opening and closing times, and any specific requirements for voting.

By following these tips you can enter your first voting booth with confidence and knowledge on how to vote.
