Parents, Please Stop Using the Student Parking Lot

A photo of the car-line that is created by parents in the student parking lot.

I never saw this issue of parents using the student parking lot to drop off and pick up their kids… until I started driving to school.

From what I can observe, the parents basically have their own system in the student parking lot. The student parking lot is a huge section of spots that students at West Boca pay for.

Parents using the student parking lot causes unnecessary back up in this lot. When they drop off their kids in the morning, they will either drop them off by the bike rack or stop in the middle of the parking lot to let out their child. This is dangerous especially if people aren’t paying attention to someone randomly braking in the parking lot. On top of that, I’ve heard from friends that there have been parents in the morning in their parking spot; a spot that they have paid for. It is very inconvenient.

This also goes hand and hand with picking up their kid from school. Many parents create their own line around the parking lot and when in line trying to get out to the street stop sign, they decided not to respect the basics of taking turns. They won’t glance over once to the line of students who have been waiting. I can’t even count the amount of times where I’m waiting for my turn to get out of the parking lot and parents don’t end up caring to look over. This is ironic because parents aren’t supposed to be in here. Not to mention, students also do this too. It shocks me that we have AP’s sitting out there every now and then not helping the line move. I don’t see the point of being out there.

Other parents will pull into a section of parking spots, wait for their children to get into the car, then think they have the right to cut off students who are waiting in the line to leave school. It can get very frustrating as a student who has been waiting patiently in line.

I had recently witnessed a week ago a situation where a parent was trying to pull out of the grass spot (on the right of the student parking lot gate) to head towards Glades road and ended up pulling out completely in front of a student. They had pulled out on the wrong side of the road and almost caused an accident. It is truly unsafe.

I personally don’t understand because we have a perfectly functioning actual carline for parents dropping off and picking up their kids but feel the need to use the students’.

I don’t expect the school to do anything about it because you cannot possibly manage everybody who comes in and out, but it is certainly an ongoing issue. Maybe it is easier for parents, but I truly will never understand why.

I hope eventually that it could be managed better in the future.

Hi! I’m Brianna Jarzomkowske and a junior at West Boca. This is my first year with The Bullseye and I am very excited to add my creativity to it! I enjoy watching sports, specifically hockey (Florida Panthers) and football (Chicago Bears). I also love to read romance novels in my free time. I’m really hoping to pursue my dreams of becoming a Sports Medicine Nurse and getting a Nursing degree at either UF or FAU. I can’t wait for this year! :)
