Did you ever feel like picking up a book but had no idea what to read? Which genre or author should you try? Sometimes it is hard to choose your next read among so many different options. This is why Mrs. Cannon, alongside Ms. Balazs, has created and organized our school’s WB Satellite Library carts!
Mrs. Cannon noticed how many of us sometimes don’t have time to go to the library and pick a book of our choice to read in our free time, or sometimes we don’t even know what to read. With that in mind, she found this idea on social media. These carts are filled with books about topics we are learning, fun reads, or month-related themes that our teachers request on Google Forms. There are currently 9 carts or bins around campus, and Mrs. Cannon is working on adding more carts in Science and Social Studies classrooms as well. If you are interested in picking out a book, go to one of the following teachers’ classrooms: Ms. Pace, Ms. Bergman, Ms. Graham, Ms. Janowitz, Ms. Brown, Ms. Kline, Ms. Moorhouse, Ms. Rosenblum, and Ms. Sawford. If you ever come across one of these carts and want to pick a book, you can scan the QR code that is attached to them and check out the book of your choice. It is quick and simple. Mrs. Cannon makes sure to change the books every new term so we have fresh choices every few months.
As long as she can remember, Mrs. Cannon has been reading; her go-to genre is usually fantasy with a side of romance, also known as Romantasy. She loves how reading takes us on a journey with characters that go through situations we are not familiar with or are VERY familiar with; how we can increase our empathy levels and create a feeling of belonging when connecting with a book. She hopes that by bringing books to our classrooms, she can help the right books find us, and in a way help students develop a love for literature. Of course, she also desires that when we read these books, we find a fun way to better develop our vocabulary, new concepts, lifelong stamina, and writing skills. That’s why she dedicates so much of herself to this fun project; she even reads Young Adult books to have recommendations ready when someone asks for her input on what they should read.
The satellite library is not only for those who already love to read, but it’s also for those who don’t know what genre would catch their attention, or for those who don’t feel like reading at all. It is a chance to find a passion for literature; finding your favorite book or the one that gets you into reading! So if you are ever interested in picking up a book but have no idea what to read, go to Mrs. Cannon for recommendations, or stop by a Satellite Library cart and check out a book! I am sure she picks each of them with lots of love and thoughtfulness for all of us.
